# Why can’t I cancel a purchase order or sales order?

## This guide explains when you can cancel a purchase order or sales order and which restrictions you should be aware of.

### When can a purchase order be cancelled?

A purchase order can generally be cancelled in the following situations:

- The purchase order has the status Confirmed, and no goods have been received or invoiced. In this case, the purchase order can also be deleted.
- The purchase order has been partially received but has not been invoiced.
- The purchase order has been partially received, and the received lines have been invoiced.
- The purchase order has been partially or fully invoiced but has not yet been fully received.

Tip: If you mark the purchase order as Rejected, it will also be cancelled automatically.

##### Restrictions with *"Valuation associated with invoicing"*

If the setting [*"Valuation associated with invoicing"*](https://helpdesk.rackbeat.com/knowledge/ht-00214?hsLang=en) is enabled, additional restrictions apply.

A partially received purchase order cannot be cancelled, regardless of whether the received lines have been invoiced.

The purchase order therefore cannot be cancelled when:

- It has been partially received, but the received lines have not been invoiced.
- It has been partially received, and the received lines have been invoiced.

When Inventory value linked to invoicing is enabled, the purchase order must be fully processed before it can be cancelled.

---

### When can a sales order be cancelled?

A sales order can generally be cancelled in the following situations:

- The order has the status Confirmed, and no goods have been shipped or invoiced. In this case, the order can also be deleted.
- The order has been partially shipped but has not been invoiced.
- The order has been partially or fully invoiced but has not yet been shipped.

##### Restrictions with "Valuation associated with invoicing"

If Inventory value linked to invoicing is enabled, a partially shipped sales order cannot be cancelled, regardless of whether the shipment has been invoiced.

The order therefore cannot be cancelled when:

- It has been partially shipped, but the shipped lines have not been invoiced.
- It has been partially shipped, and the shipment has been invoiced.

When Inventory value linked to invoicing is enabled, the sales order must be fully processed before it can be cancelled.

### How to cancel a purchase order or sales order

1. Go to Purchases → Purchase orders or Sales → Orders.
2. Open the purchase order or sales order you want to cancel.
3. Click Actions in the upper-right corner.
4. Select Cancel.

Once the purchase order or sales order has been cancelled, it will be archived, and no further actions can be performed on it.

Before cancelling, make sure that all necessary receipts, shipments and invoices have been completed.

---

### When can it be deleted instead?

A purchase order or sales order can only be deleted if no transactions have been registered on it:

- A purchase order must not have any receipts or invoices.
- A sales order must not have any shipments or invoices.

If transactions have already been registered, the purchase order or sales order must be cancelled instead of deleted.
